APPENDIX 2

Employment of Women - 1881 - 1941

In 1881 there were 3,887,000 women recorded as “occupied” by the Census. In subsequent years the figures were as follows:

1891 4,489,000
1901 4.763,000
1911 5,424,000
1921 5,701,000
1931 6,265,000

During all these years the population of Great Britain was increasing fairly rapidly, and much of the increase of the number of women in employment was only in step with the all round expansion of industry. Whereas the number of men seeking employment increased proportionately to the number of men in the population, however, this was not the case with the women, presumably because all men who could do so sought work of necessity, while women sought work only when the economic position prevailing made it necessary for them to do so and when technological advances opened up fresh avenues for them.

The proportionate increases of one decade over the last was as follows:

Proportionate increases of Women in Employment, 1881 – 1931

%
1891 15.5
1901 6.0
1911 14.0
1921 5.0
1931 10.0

The average increase over the last two decades was 440,000. Allowing for a 5% fall in the rate of increase 1931 - 1941, as seems possible in view of previous figures, one might have expected a total of 6,625,000 women in employment, or seeking employment in 1941, and about 6,700,000 in 1943. The official estimate for 1943 saw 7,500,000. The increase over the number expected, due principally to war conditions, was, therefore, approximately 800,000.
