8. REASONS FOR NOT SERVING POTATOES AS A MAIN DISH

Interviewers reported that the majority of housewives did not understand what was meant by “making potatoes a main dish” ; they thought they followed the suggestion when eating a normal dinner consisting of vegetables, meat, potatoes, pudding, etc., if potatoes made up the bulk of the meal.

Not quite a third of the 48% who said they carried out the suggestion said they got the idea from the Ministry of Food publicity.

Those who said they did not follow the suggestion gave the following reasons:-

The most interesting results in this table are the relatively high number who do not to use Potatoes as a main dish, because enough of the other foods are available; and the number who say they do not like potatoes well enough to eat them as a main dish for dinner. It is also interesting that 16% considered potatoes were not nourishing enough to form the principal constituent of the main meal of day.
